Emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that is characterized by the progressive destruction of the lung tissue, particularly the alveoli (air sacs) in the lungs. This destruction leads to reduced elasticity and function of the lungs, making it difficult to fully exhale air and causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. Research in emphysema aims to better understand the underlying mechanisms of the disease, identify risk factors, develop new treatments, and improve the quality of life for individuals living with the condition. This may include studying the role of genetics, environmental factors, and inflammation in the development of emphysema, as well as exploring new therapies such as pulmonary rehabilitation, medications, and surgical interventions. Ultimately, the goal of this research is to improve outcomes for individuals with emphysema and reduce the burden of this debilitating lung disease.
